Why People Love Sports

sportsSport is entertaining and distracts people from “real life” either as spectators or participants. There are various reasons why people love sports.

Sports Inspire People

In spite of undesirable practices such as cheating and fraud that often appear in the current headlines, sports demonstrate the fundamental nature of competition by giving people the quickest, smartest, strongest, and most inspired performances. Sports consist of people who strive for excellence. Therefore, being in the presence of such people, indirectly as observers or directly as participants inspire us to move to higher standards in everyday live.

Sports Make People Believe in the Impossible

Most people believe in miracles, but they do not happen often enough. However, players often break world records in athletics, golf, cricket, or football. This aspect of sports often stir courage in people and make them ask “why not me?”

Sports Engage the Mind

Although sport is a physical discipline, even a casual fan will agree that the mind and body work together. Whenever an individual gets on top of the game, the mental aspects become huge both in the sense of getting “psyched up”, devising a strategy, researching and developing training techniques. Indeed, sport is increasingly becoming a science. Therefore, for both spectators and observers there is mental litmus in the current sporting world thus people can enjoy as much as they want and test their level of engagement.

Sports Give People a Place in History

Most people have been lucky to witness personally historic sporting events but others have not. However, even if people observe sports on live television, they can claim to be part of the history. In other words, both participants and observers receive and contribute to the shared energy at the particular moment the history occurred. Such history stays with people and carries a particular weight to people who will only hear about it in the future.

Sports Validate People’s Competitive Nature

Some people argue that the competitive urge in them is a primal aggression that should be stifled. Others argue that their competitive nature is God-given. However, in sport all people play, but only one person or team gets the prize. Therefore, sport encourages people to forget what is behind and strain to achieve what is ahead thus attaining the goal to win.

Marketing and Advertising

Sports are even ideal for using rketing and advertising.  Since sports are so popular, many people watch them and whether you are at an arena, a stadium or at home watching a sport on television, you will see advertisements everywhere.  Ideally, sport impact people at every level of their being, the mind, body, spirit, and soul that is why people love sports.

The Beginning of Football

footballAh, the joys of football. The unique game enjoyed by many all over – well mostly just the United States. From every other place other than America and Canada, I’m not speaking of soccer, although soccer was a term that originated in Britain about two hundred years ago, the relation to games such as rugby football was bound to cause some confusion.

The history of American football (not the round one, remember?) is not a lengthy one, only starting in the later part nineteenth century. In November of 1869, students from Rutgers and Princeton played a soccer style game inspired by the London Football Association’s rules. Meanwhile colleges is Boston were experimenting with a rugby soccer hybrid. Yale medical student, Walter Camp was a key in American football’s development. He is even known as the father of football. He came up with the quarterback position, eleven man team, and the line of scrimmage. Also, he threw away the ‘scrimmage’ and offered that the team must give up the ball after a certain number of ‘downs’.

Football has come a long way and has been developed thoroughly. Nowadays there are even fantasy football teams where people trade somewhat imaginary players in a sense based on the real athletes. Powered by platforms such as Yahoo, it is a surprisingly popular hobby. Touchdown dances are an art form in the sport. So if you go and buy a ticket to a football game you will probably get a bit of a dance show as well. And you’ve probably heard of the Tebowing where Tim bows down in prayer mid game.

Unfortunately, like anything there is a bit of a dark side to some of the people involved. Michael Vick of the New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles, and Atlanta falcons was involved in a dog fighting ring for around five years. Other than that, they continue to perform great games for millions of people.
